Brühl

For more than 700 years, the city of Brühl already has its city rights.
Far beyond the region, Brühl is known for its Max Ernst Museum, the World Heritage Sites of Augustusburg Castle and Falkenlust Castle, and the Phantasialand.
The numerous events in the pedestrian zone unfold an attraction far beyond the Brühler city limits. Whether spring or Christmas market, mobile Brühl, Döppe un Buuremaat, old town festival or fair - in Brühl is always something going on.

UNESCO World Heritage - Palaces Augustusburg and Falkenlust

The castles Augustusburg and Falkenlust were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List with their gardens as a Gesamtkunstwerk of the German Rococo in 1984.
The construction of the castle Augustusburg, the favorite residence of the Cologne Elector and Archbishop Clemens August von Wittelsbach (1700-1761), was begun in 1725 by the Westphalian architect Johann Conrad Schlaun and from 1728-68 under the direction of the Bavarian court architect François de Cuvilliés outstanding Residence of the time.
The heart of the castle is the grand staircase built according to plans by Balthasar Neumann. Dominique Girard created the baroque garden after the French model.

In addition, in just a few years from 1729-37, the small pleasure and hunting lodge Falkenlust emerged as one of the most intimate and precious creations of German Rococo.

Castle Augustusburg, the favorite residence of the Cologne Elector and Archbishop Clemens August von Wittelsbach (1700-1761), counts as a masterpiece of Rococo to the first significant creations of this style in Germany.

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia as owner ensures that a world-class castle is preserved in Brühl and - together with Falkenlust Castle - is open to the public as a museum.
